Description
The Sunova Carver (Casey range) is a hybrid foil board designed to bridge the gap between dedicated downwind SUP foil boards and more nimble wing-foil boards. Its goal is to deliver efficient early take-off (even in lighter wind), smooth gliding, and enough agility to maneuver well in varied conditions, from flatwater winging to downwind runs and small waves. If you want a “one-board quiver” that works well in many conditions, the Carver aims to be it.
Key Design Features & Construction
These are the design decisions that give the Carver its versatility:
-
Outline & Tail Shape:
The Carver features a mostly parallel outline with a slightly narrower nose and a diamond tail. This contributes to clean water release, improved control, and quicker foil take-off. -
Rails & Edge Detail:
Defined chined rails with hard lower edges. The front foot through the tail has sharper edges to help release water cleanly, reduce drag, and make foil transitions smoother. -
Rocker Profile:
Entry rocker (at nose) has enough lift for small jumps or nose events, while the tail rocker is kept flat to enable fast planing and stable glide when on foil. -
Bottom Shape:
A subtle “rounded V” toward the nose that transitions into a flatter bottom mid-board and tail. This helps with touch-downs (less snagging or “sticking” on reentry) and supports efficient planing. -
Deck Layout / Rider Interface:
Concave deck helps lower the rider’s center of gravity and keeps them closer to the foil; many foot-strap insert options allow customized foot positioning. The concave isn’t so pronounced that it traps water after take-off. -
Construction Material & Build:
Made with TR3Tec construction, which combines lightweight EPS cores and sustainable wood laminates (or wood stringer/planks) plus high-quality finishes to balance weight, strength, durability, and performance. -
Fin / Foil Mounting Setup:
Twin foil box configuration (i.e. two foil boxes) using Futures style mounts. This allows flexibility in foil setup and potentially better stiffness/rigidity in the area over the foil.
Performance & Ride Characteristics
Here’s what users can expect when riding the Carver:
-
Early Take-Off & Light Wind Performance: Because of its width, outline, and rocker, the Carver makes it easier to get up on foil even when wind is light. Good planing behavior and minimal “stalling” before lift.
-
Glide Efficiency: Once foiling, the flatter sections and efficient outline give good glide, holding momentum well and reducing the need for excess power or wing input. Makes longer rides more comfortable.
-
Responsiveness / Carving Ability: Compared to pure downwind SUP foil boards (which tend to be longer), the Carver is shorter and somewhat more maneuverable; good edge control, decent carving, and quicker turn-in.
-
Versatility: Works well in a variety of conditions — from flatwater and lighter winds (for winging) to small waves and downwind runs. Many users appreciate its ability to serve well in multiple roles.
-
Volume / Float: The different sizes give plenty of volume for riders of varying weights. The larger sizes (~85-95 L) allow heavier riders or those who carry gear to have sufficient float; smaller sizes are more nimble.
