Description
The Air Foil Learner is Starboard’s 2025 “foil version” of their Learner-series boards. It’s an inflatable 4-in-1 board designed to let users explore foiling, winging, windsurfing, and SUP all with one board. It’s meant as a gateway board: for riders who are curious about foiling but want flexibility, and don’t want to buy separate specialized boards for each discipline.
Key Design Goals & Concept
-
One board, many modes: Foiling, winging, windsurfing, stand-up paddling. The board is built to accommodate the hardware for all these modes, so you can switch between them.
-
Ease of foiling: Designed so users can start learning foil earlier / in lighter conditions. The construction, mounting, shape, and accessories are tuned for helping with take-offs and control.
-
Inflatable portability + stiffness: Being inflatable makes transportation, storage, and travel easier, yet the construction aims to keep it stiff, supportive, and responsive enough for foil-use.
Construction & Materials
-
Deluxe Lite Construction: This is Starboard’s top inflatable build for this type of board. It uses Woven Drop-Stitch fabric, which allows high internal pressure, better stiffness, less flex.
-
Aluminium Top Plate (Foil Mounting Plate): A solid aluminium plate is built into the deck to provide a rigid foil mounting. This ensures minimal flex between rider’s feet and the foil, giving better “direct foil response.” There’s only about 1.5 cm between the standing surface and the foil base (mast).
-
Welded Rail Technology: The rails (edges of the board) and the foil opening are welded rather than glued. This improves durability, reduces risk of leaks, and helps maintain stiff, durable structure.
-
3D Rail Edge Release Tech: A shaped rail edge using an elastomer/compound that improves water release — making planing / take-off easier and reducing drag. This edge follows the board’s contour.
-
Lightweight EVA Plug: In the foil mounting area there is a plug to seal the foil base pocket, creating a smooth, flush bottom for efficient water flow. Minimises turbulence under board and around mast.
Shape & Hardware Features
-
Removable Center Fin Boxes: Two of them. They sit closer to the rails, which improves tracking and upwind performance in winging or windsurfing mode. When removed, they reduce drag (good for SUP or lighter conditions).
-
Removable Mast Track / Mast Insert: For windsurfing mode. Also the board can have that insert removed (or track removed) to have a flush flat deck when using purely SUP mode.
-
Foot Straps & Mount Inserts: Adjustable foot strap positions to help with balance and control when foiling. There are several positions both front and back for fine tuning.
-
Included Fins: Comes with a back fin and center (for winging / windsurfing) — for example Drake Shallow centre fins.
-
Accessory Kit: Lightweight leash (~70 g), dual-nozzle pump (Tiki Pump) for board & wing, a travel/wheelie bag. Also includes screws for the foil top plate mount.
Specifications
Here are the key specs:
Property | Value |
---|---|
Rider Weight Capacity | Up to ~100 kg (can support riders up to ~100 kg reasonably) |
Board Weight (Deluxe Lite, Aluminium version) | ≈ 11.4 kg |
Foil Setup | Top Plate mounting (foil directly mounts to the board via the aluminium plate) |
-
SUP mode: Drop US fin box (single fin) <br>- Wing / Windsurf mode: removable center fins and side/removable US boxes for stability/tracking (use supplied Drake Shallow fins)
| Tail Design | Wide tail; tail width ~ 23″ gives more planing surface, improves stability during take-off under foil.
| Thick & Wide Nose | To help early stability for beginners, easier to paddle and to get on foil.
The Starboard Air Foil Learner Inflatable Foilboard is a versatile hybrid designed to let you explore foiling plus other wind/wing sports with one board. Its Deluxe Lite construction, foil top-plate, removable fins and mast track, and wide stable shape make it a great entry-to-mid level foil board. While you won’t get the full performance of rigid boards built just for high speed or advanced foil work, this board gives an excellent platform for learning, catching early flights, paddling or winging, and growing your skills.
